It’s close to Nanaimo’s woodgrove mall and various large grocery stores, shops and multiple parks and oceanside areas to explore.
The History of Lantzville, British Columbia: From Coal Mining Origins to Small Town Charm
In the mid-1800s and even probably earlier since then, Lantzville was inhabited by the Snuneymuxw First Nation, whose ancestral territory included the area surrounding what is now Lantzville. The Snuneymuxw people relied on the land and sea for sustenance, engaging in fishing, hunting, and gathering.
The European presence in Lantzville began in the late 1800s when coal was discovered in the region. An English coal miner named Emanuel Wiles (also known as Robert Emanuel or Bob) is the first known European to have come to Lantzville, from which the European settlement would begin in 1968.
Emanuel Wiles didn’t come here looking for coal though, he just came here to create a home for himself while he worked at the other local mines. It wasn’t until 1916 that coal was discovered in the area by Jack Grant, sparking the establishment of the Nanoose Collieries Company. Just four years later in 1920, the Nanoose-Wellington Collieries Company purchased Grant’s Mine and renamed the area Lantzville after company director Fraser Lantz. The coal mine soon became the heart of the community, providing jobs and purpose for several years.
The prosperous coal mine era was short-lived unfortunately. By 1926, the usable coal seams started running low and the mine was closed down. This marked a major transition for Lantzville as it moved from a mining-based economy to a more limited economy and summer cottage area.
Despite the closure of the coal mine, Lantzville continued to grow as a community. Several settler families made it their home and are now honored through local street names, waterways, and landmarks. Lantzville became known for its small town charm, where neighbors look out for each other and friendly greetings are part of everyday life.
To celebrate its mining history, Lantzville hosts an annual fair called Minetown Days at Huddlestone Park. The event features local businesses, food, rides, a parade, and fun activities for all ages. Minetown Days has become a cherished tradition for bringing the community together and commemorating Lantzville’s coal mining origins.
From Emanuel Wiles’ first land grant to the rise and fall of the coal mining industry, Lantzville has transformed over the decades while still maintaining its small town appeal and strong sense of community. The residents continue to honor the past while embracing the future of this special place on Vancouver Island.
